About Us
Helping People Discover What Credit Unions Can Do For Them · asmarterchoice.org
ASmarterChoice.org is a public resource created to help everyday people understand credit unions, compare them to banks, and find one they're eligible to join — with no jargon and no sales pitch.
Who We Are
ASmarterChoice.org is a free public resource built around one goal: helping you find a credit union you're actually eligible to join. Most people know banks — far fewer know that there's likely a not-for-profit, member-owned credit union nearby that they qualify for, often through where they live, work, worship, or study. We built this site to close that gap.
What We Do
Credit Union Locator
A searchable, nationwide directory that helps you find credit unions you're eligible to join based on where you live, work, worship, or study.
Plain-Language Education
Clear explanations of what makes a credit union different from a bank — ownership structure, NCUA insurance, governance, and more.
Bank vs. Credit Union Comparisons
Side-by-side breakdowns of rates, fees, and structure so you can see the practical difference for yourself.
Real Member Stories
First-hand accounts from people who've made the switch, so you can hear what credit union membership is actually like.
Why We Exist
Credit unions are not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperatives. Because they don't answer to outside shareholders, the value they generate flows back to the people who bank with them — in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings yields, and fewer fees. That structure isn't widely understood, and it's easy for a consumer comparing "banks" online to miss it entirely. Our job is to close that gap: to make it simple to learn what a credit union is, confirm you're eligible to join one, and get connected — free of charge, with no obligation.
Independent Information, Industry-Backed
We're funded and supported by the credit union industry, and we're upfront about that. At the same time, our goal on every page is the same: give you accurate, useful information so you can make an informed decision — whether that decision is to join a credit union or simply to understand how one works. We don't sell your information, and we don't push any single credit union over another; the locator simply shows you which ones you're eligible to join.
